Latino Decisions in the Washington Post: Democratic primary polls are under-representing minorities

Matt Barreto, principle of Latino Decisions, wrote an op-ed for the Washington Post’s Monkey Cage blog. Dr. Barreto addresses the under-representation of minorities in polling samples and the impact this is having on the Democratic debates.

Trump’s presidency has prompted a variety of groups — blacks, Latinos, Asian Americans and Native Americans – to get more politically engaged, with massive protests and record voter turnout in the 2018 midterms. At the same time, the proportion of the population that’s not white continues to grow. As a result, the 2020 election will have the highest share of non-white voters ever seen in a presidential year.

But we’re not seeing that when we look at polls. Current polling methods don’t accurately sample minority voters. That failure especially skews our understanding of the Democratic electorate — and limits the candidates who will be on tonight’s debate stage.
