MIAMI – JUNE 20, 2019 – As 20 Democratic presidential candidates prepare for the initial round of primary debates beginning next week, Univision News announces key findings of its first Hispanic voter survey of the 2020 election cycle. Topline data regarding Latino voter preferences for Democratic candidates and rating of president Trump’s job performance can now be viewed on UnivisionNoticias.com as well as all on Univision News digital and social media platforms. The complete Univision News Poll will be available on Tuesday, June 25, also on UnivisionNoticias.com and all Univision News digital and social media platforms. Additionally, highlights of the survey’s findings will be featured starting today across Univision Network news programs, including Noticiero Univision Edición  Digital,” “Noticiero Univision,” “Noticiero Univision Edición Nocturna,” and “Al Punto” (To the Point).

Commissioned by Univision News and overseen by its newly hired Director of Polling, Dr. Sergio Garcia-Rios, the bipartisan survey was conducted by the polling firms Latino Decisions and North Star Opinion Research between June 11 and June 17, 2019.  Overall, 1,007 Hispanic U.S. citizens eligible to vote were interviewed across all fifty states from a combination of landline, cell phone, and online completion modes. All voters were randomly selected and given the choice to complete the interview in English or Spanish.

“For our first pre-election Hispanic voter survey this year, Univision News’ political team has brought together the nation’s top polling experts to provide the deepest and broadest view possible of Latinos’ opinions and voting intentions for 2020,” said Lourdes Torres, SVP, Political Coverage & Special Projects, Univision News. “Candidates should pay attention to these and upcoming Univision polls designed to provide unique insight into an increasingly complex community that will demand more than having a candidate say a few words in Spanish.”

Here are some of the topline results revealed today:

  • 68% of Latino registered voters feel that this presidential election will be more important than 2016 and 74% say they are planning to vote in it.
  • Only 19% of Hispanics polled intend to vote for president Donald Trump; 63% say they have decided to vote for a Democratic candidate or are leaning toward a Democrat in the 2020 presidential election.
  • A significant 19% of Latino voters are undecided as to their choice of candidate/party at this time.
  • Of the numerous candidates currently running in the Democratic primaries, Joe Biden (21%) and Bernie Sanders (20%) are in a virtual tie with Hispanic voters, while Julián Castro was third (9%) followed by Beto O’Rourke (8%), Elizabeth Warren (7%) and Kamala Harris (6%), while most other contenders rank below 2% due to lack of name recognition.

“We see no evidence whatsoever that Latinos are receptive to Trump’s latest anti-immigrant rhetoric, instead they are strongly opposed to his policy agenda,” stated Matt Barreto, Co-Founder & Managing Partner, Latino Decisions. “However, no Democratic candidate should take the Latino vote for granted; they all need to work hard on making sincere connections and conducting real outreach to Latinos if they want to see a massive turnout in 2020.”

“This survey of Latino voters sends a message to Univision’s viewership that the Hispanic vote cannot be taken for granted by either political party,” added Whit Ayres, Founder and President, North Star Opinion Research. “How Latinos vote in the presidential election will depend on the message and outreach from the ultimate presidential nominees.”

In addition to extensive national results, the Univision News Poll also contains a section dedicated to polling conducted among Hispanic eligible voters exclusively in the crucial swing state of Florida.

Publication of the entire survey, including the Florida section, is slated for Tuesday, June 25. On that same date at noon ET, Univision News will host a webinar featuring members of its political reporting team and the pollsters who conducted the survey. Members of the press who wish to participate in the Univision News webinar should contact Sandra Ramos at [email protected].
